Law Jobs Growth in China

It won’t surprise anyone to know that the fastest-growing law jobs market is China which, according to the National Law Journal is now the second most popular location for American law firms.

The NLJ figures cover 2010 and show that of the “NLJ 250″ firms, 70 of them maintained offices in the fast-growing economy with a total legal complement of 2055 lawyers.

The major international law firms – be they US-based or UK-based have opened offices in China over the past decade or longer, but the developing, dynamic legal regime in China itself has also given rise to the development of new law jobs with Chinese law firms that have risen steadily.

Robert Chu, who headed the Beijing office of New York-based Sullivan & Cromwell LLP from 2007 to 2009 said to Bloomberg last year:

“The secular rise of these Chinese firms is part of a seismic shift in the competitive landscape for international firms in China,” said Chu, who now heads his firm’s Australia practice.

Law Jobs - Chinese law firms (and the law jobs that go with them) have echoed the growth seen by such firms as Baker & McKenzie, based on capital flows and following the expansion of their own clients beyond China.

This too was remarked upon by David Fleming who was B&M’s managing partner, which has expanded beyond its Chicago base to open offices around the globe. Lawyers like David Fleming see no reason why Chinese law firms will not offer the range and quality of services that major international law firms currently offer.

China itself has 190,000 lawyers (one for every 7000 people), which compares to a ratio in the US of one lawyer per 303 people, and one per 390 in the UK.

Law firms other countries like Japan, Australia, Germany and elsewhere – over 20 in fact, have also seen growth in China’s legal market and a total over over 230 offices have opened on mainland China and 70 in Hong Kong.

The scope for law jobs in the growing China market is high.

JD Match, which is largely the brainchild of law-firm consultant and writer Bruce MacEwen, who will serve as the company’s president, will “match” law students with firms, much in the way matching services pair up medical students and residency programs.

It’ll work like this: law students will pay $99 per recruiting season to sign up. From there, they’ll upload their information, including a resume, etc., and will then rank the law firms they’d like to work for. On the other end, the firms will rank students who’ve signed up.

In tough economic times , it’s often salient to look back at what some key legal career advisers and others have to say about landing your first law job. Legal vacancies may be hard to find, but what about scoring that first law job? How difficult is it (okay, we know it’s hard) but can you actually get something by adopting a good ‘legal vacancy policy’?

Here is an article that came originally from Law.com where they spoke to career counselors at law schools and then looked at common legal vacancy-hunting mistakes and the fate of the ‘bottom third’ of the class. They then spoke to partners at six major law firms – the people who decide if 2Ls will get law job interviews or law job offers – what are they actually looking for? And how can you increase your chances of landing a law job?

Career counselors: Dena Bauman, David A. Clarke School of Law, University of the District of Columbia; LuEllen Conti, Howard University School of Law; Gihan Fernando, Georgetown University Law Center; Jessica Heywood, Columbus School of Law, Catholic University; Victoria Huber, George Mason University School of Law; Traci Jenkins, Washington College of Law, American University; Carole Montgomery, George Washington University Law School.

What career options do law students most easily overlook in their planning?

“The path of least resistance is the big law firms. … Students assume they’ll get a law firm job, and they don’t think about if they want it.” – Carole Montgomery

“They look for the most obvious opportunities, like those advertised on campus or found through campus interviews.” – Dena Bauman

“Large corporate law firms make offers and expect answers before the vast majority of other offers open. … It’s hard to turn down an offer — and a lucrative offer, at that.” – Gihan Fernando

“Students, typically, overlook law-related options, including local, state and federal legislative careers and careers in business and industry, where the JD is quite useful, but not required.” – LuEllen Conti

“Public service or public interest positions. Students overlook this because of the amount of law school debt.” – Jessica Heywood

“They may think that the Department of Justice does a certain kind of work, but they can get the same or similar work at another agency.” – Victoria Huber

“Every trade association in the world has headquarters in Alexandria, Va. No one ever thinks about those.” – Carole Montgomery

What are some common career mistakes that you see students make?

“They rely too much on people like me to provide all the answers.” – Dena Bauman

“They don’t do a self-assessment.” – Carole Montgomery

“Being unaware of employer deadlines and not starting early enough because employers hire so soon.” – Victoria Huber

“Many people can’t do much more than focus on the first job. … It would be helpful to strategize on what they might be doing down the road.” – Gihan Fernando

“They limit themselves to job postings and advertisements. … A self-initiated or direct letter is an essential part of a comprehensive job search.” – Jessica Heywood

“Not recognizing that résumés and cover letters are a first impression and very important.” – Traci Jenkins

“They don’t hit up enough employers.” – Victoria Huber

“They think they only have to be nice to partners and attorneys. … Some are rude to secretaries. Other people notice.” – Carole Montgomery

“They get discouraged too easily. … They don’t circle back and ask for guidance and help in getting to the next step.” – Victoria Huber

“They wear iPods in the office. … They don’t want face time. They’ll say they just want to be judged on their work. That’s not the kind of profession this is.” – Carole Montgomery

What should law students in the bottom third of their class be doing?

“Network, network, network.” – Carole Montgomery

My question is: If the bus has to block all lanes when you load and unload or its enough to turn red lights? also where I can find about this law? Thanks

When a stopped school bus flashes its red light (s), traffic approaching from any direction, even in front of the school and school parking lots, must stop before reaching the bus. You should allow at least 20 feet (6 m) from the bus. You can identify this bus for a "School Bus" sign lights red top, and the only yellow / orange. Before a school bus is stopped to load or unload passengers, the driver usually flash yellow warning lights. When you see them, slow down and be prepared to stop. Once a school bus stopped, you can not drive again until the red lights stop flashing or when the bus driver or a traffic officer waves you also the driver of a school bus carrying students may not turn right at any red light and all drivers must stop if the bus lights are on. This law applies on all roads in the state of New York. You should stop for a school bus, even if it is on the opposite side of a divided highway …………..

b.leaf of our intrepid correspondent embedded 2L

When I started my summer internship in Brightleaf Corporation I had just survived the infamous years Lawschool 1L. I knew that Article 12 (b) (6), res ipsa Loquitor, and all the other things that 1LS success or failure of his career. But most importantly, I knew the economy is reflected in the time I graduated and I would be fine. How do I know? When I entered law school, said that 94% of his class who graduated had a job within nine months. The world needs lawyers and I was going to be one. After all, I got good grades, made the National Trial team and I was in a clinic. He had big dreams of running down a street in Manhattan with my suit on my way to a big law firm where I work my way up the ranks. There was no reason to worry, right? Incorrect.

I left my internship in a completely different frame of mind. The idea that was going to require skills that law school did not give me had never crossed my mind before that date. Do not want to be prepared for our future careers? How had never heard of the ineffectiveness of the law firms? What I do not know about the economics of business?

In attempting to answer to these questions, a teacher came to mind. 1L Property My teacher was the only one who had taken the time to talk to us about the things you need to know. In the "Last Ten Minutes" we discuss a variety of topics, from interviews with billable hours. So I went back and picked his brain after more.

He had spent years working for a law firm in DC While there, he suggested the automation of documents for signature and oversaw the implementation. Now, teaches his class how to use the system Farms to quickly documents from templates. So I asked him which classes or even law firms that never discussed? He answered with another question. What was your main degree? Where was I immediately saw with this and quietly whispered "political science." And there it was. Most lawyers have no experience in science and are not as receptive to the use of technology as a result.

He explained that it was the same basic reason why many law firms are not managed well. The skills to use as lawyers do not always translate into management skills. Does it really make sense that the lawyer for the billable hours must end exploitation the company? As much as it pains me to admit, probably not.

Lawyers and law schools need to reevaluate what is important in the legal world today. Advances in technology and changing business models are lost in most of us. If we do not attempt to catch up, we will fall hopelessly behind of the curve.
