Law firms differ in how they hire, but there are some generalizations that can be made.
Some firms like to train their own lawyers and if you’ve had some experience then they will almost certainly expect you to bring some business with you.
Generally the best time for lateral moves is after around 3 or 4 years’ experience. Certainly when you 5+ years’ with a firm and move then some client movement will also be anticipated.
The fact is that more experienced lawyers will often find it more difficult to move to a firm – in this tougher economy at least – than a lawyer with less experience.
Try looking for law jobs in different areas. Many law jobs – with all the legal boards, associations, governmental and other agencies looking for lawyers – are not necessarily visible in just the mainstream media. Be resourceful in hunting down good jobs.
Develop a good network of people who can help. Not just recruiters, but also other attorneys and those who are already in the market or who have good connections in it.
Don’t be afraid to ‘cold call’ or write to those who you may be interested in working for. It shows iniative and you can often ‘bookmark’ yourself with them for future reference.
