The issue with lawyer vacancies is finding the jobs that are right for you, which means using some smart selection criteria to choose which of the legal vacancies available at any one time are going to suit your resume.

You want to ensure you set out your own criteria for a lawyer job  before simply hitting the ‘search’ tab.

What are the sort of things you need to know before searching for the right lawyer vacancy?

And what about if you’re not first in class?  What do legal recruiters say about filling a legal vacancy if you’re in the bottom third?

You need some key criteria sorted, including:

* your actual qualifications – be realistic. Don’t apply for jobs you have no hope of getting and ensure you’re ‘meeting the bill’ in terms of your own background and experience

*get the best job recruiter(s) working for you.  They make all the difference.

*set up great ‘alerts’ with law jobs sites (like LawJobsPipeline) to make sure you’re in the know.

*prepare a great resume.  You can’t get anywhere without have the best-ever resume.  Get someone who knows what they’re doing to check yours.

*get your interview technique sorted. You don’t need to be the best lawyer to fill the best lawyer vacancy. But you sure as hell will need great technique.

*Be flexible.  Great jobs are not there just for fitting exactly the criteria you would like in an ideal world. It’s not an ideal world and flexibility is worth its weight in job satisfaction and career prospects.
