Can i call my self a phscological analyst without a degree?

quoting a book i have read, i believe it is called “the new psychiatrist”, it says that although one must have the proper credentials to call themselves a psychiatrist or psychologist, any person can hang a shingle and call themselves a psychoanalyst or researcher. i want to know what the guide lines to this is, and what i can to if i do take this on as a career path. I would like to work directly with people, in my own business, as a basis for my studies, but i don’t want to go through the years and years of college and hundreds of thousands of dollars. I would like to know what kind of work i can do with clients, anything from anti-smoking counselling to marrige counseling to meditation classes. i am located in upstate new york. Also, would becoming a universal minister or similar position give me any legal means to work. Thank you

New York carefully licenses professions. Licensed professions include psychoanalyst, marriage and family therapist, mental health counsellor and psychologist. So you are very limited in what you can proclaim yourself without some verification of appropriate training. See: http://www.op.nysed.gov/home.html
