can a union charge dues to a Temporary employee?
i currently work for the Port Authority ny/nj Trans-Hudson Corporation (path) as a Temporary Passenger Information Agent. there are permanent agents and they belong to a union called the teamsters after three months we are to pay union dues to the teamsters or else we lose our jobs we get none of the benfits of being in the union we just pay the union dues or else we get fired.my question is this legal i feel its Extortion why should we pay if we arent gonna get any of the benfits
It depends upon the contract between the union and the employer. In this case, the answer appears to be that, yes, they can.
